A newly accredited primary care sports medicine fellowship program has joined the Methodist Center for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Willowbrook.

The fellowship will be overseen by Dr. Scott Rand and will give one person the chance to learn about the specific needs of athletes for one year.

Rand will be involved in the training and education of the fellows, who will learn how to treat many types of injuries, from sprains and concussions to more high-tech treatments like computerized neuropsychological testing.

"In order to truly care for an active person, you must understand the effect that exercise has on the body and on disease processes, and you must also understand how different disease processes affect an athlete's ability to exercise safely," Rand said in a press release. "This is an innovative approach to treating athletes and the active in our society."

The program, one of two in the Houston area, will improve services at the center as well as prepare more physicians to treat athletes.

Fellows will work with physicians and orthopedic surgeons throughout Houston in treating all level of athletes, and will be involved in hands-on learning in training rooms, on the sidelines and at Rice University.
