Driver of disabled vehicle dies in crash
A man working on his disabled vehicle on the side of the road was killed Tuesday when his car was struck from behind by another motorist, according to information for the Houston Police Dept.’s Vehicular Crimes Division.
The name of the 53-year-old victim was being withheld, pending verification from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred at about 6:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 14100 block of the Northwest Freeway (U.S. Highway 290).
The victim was the driver of a Nissan 240SX and he and another man were working under the hood. At the same time, a Chevrolet Suburban was traveling west on the Northwest Freeway service road. As the driver attempted to change lanes, his speed prevented him from avoiding hitting the rear of the Nissan.
The impact of the crash pushed the Nissan forward, running over both men, Sgt. R. Gonzales and Officer C. Tosso cited in their reports.
The second man was transported by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital. His condition was not known.
Police have not released the name of the Suburban driver. Although the investigation is continuing, Gonzales and Tossa said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
