Preschoolers at the Montessori Preschool at Copperfield have collected 376 food items for Cypress families.
Children established a goal of collecting 65 food items in a month and surpassed their goal by 301 in two weeks.
Additionally, all throughout the month of November, teachers at the school introduced service as a way to inspire math readiness in preschool children. By collecting the cans and non-perishable items, students practiced counting skills, place value, addition and subtraction.
Teachers aided the counting process, introducing place value to understand the value of three-digit numbers and tracking total donations on a large chart.
And kindergartners practiced three-digit addition and subtraction problems to account for the total number of food items.
All food items will be donated to Cypress Assistance Ministries for Thanksgiving.
