Cy-Fair ISD students win Young Artist Concerto awards
Two high school students received Honorable Mention notice at the 12th annual Fort Bend Symphony Orchestra 2012 Young Artist Concerto Competition.
Cypress Falls High School sophomore Melissa Du and Jersey Village High School junior Andrew Shiau were both recognized.
Du began playing the violin at the age of 6 and has been a member of the Texas Music Educators Association’s all-state symphony orchestra, the Houston Youth Symphony and All-Region high school orchestra. She has also been concertmaster in her Region 27 orchestra in both middle school and high school, and has consistently received “Superior” ratings in solo and ensemble competitions.
Shiau started playing cello at the age of 11 and has won several competitions, including the Houston Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, the Clear Lake Concerto Competition and the Houston Civic Symphony Concerto Competition. He won the bronze medal at the Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition. Shiau has been a member of the Texas All-State Orchestra for three years, and was selected as a 2011 Houston Young Artist.
