Harris County Appraisal District to offer personal property workshops

The Harris County Appraisal District has scheduled three free workshops to provide business owners with instructions regarding the business personal property rendition process.

Businesses are required by state law to file rendition statements with HCAD by April 16.

The workshops will be held from 1-5 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 and April 11, and 8 a.m. to noon April 14 in the sixth-floor training room of the district’s offices at 13013 Northwest Freeway.

HCAD chief appraiser Jim Robinson said the district has sent rendition notices to businesses known to operate in Harris County based upon past filings and other information. All business owners, whether or not they have received notifications, are required to file renditions.

“Under a state law that took effect in 2004, businesses that fail to render, or those that render late, are subject to a 10 percent tax penalty,” Robinson said, according to a press release. “In the case of fraudulent renditions, there is a 50 percent civil penalty plus possible criminal prosecution.”
