Community leaders join LSC-CyFair during Gay Pride Week
Several community leaders, judges and educators presented during the recent Gay Pride Week held at Lone Star College-CyFair to raise awareness of issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students.
The event, co-chaired by Dr. Aaron Alon, Hilary Harris and Blake Ellis and founded by Sergio Sarmiento, included a morning of sports and games followed by the presentations. Guest speakers included: Judge Steve Kirkland, Harris County's first GLBT elected judge; Houston Associate Municipal Court Judge Charles Spain; Dr. Feleccia Moore-Davis, vice president for Student Learning at LSC-CyFair; Lou Weaver, president of the board of directors of the Transgender Foundation of America; Dr. Gary Brewton, founder of the Montrose Clinic; and St. Mark's United Methodist Church pastor Marilyn Meeker-Williams.
Alon and Joan Valladares were presented with the Robert McGehee Award for their dedication and commitment to the overall success of GLBT students.
The closing ceremony featured a video by a GLBTA student club titled "It Gets Better." For more information, visit www.lonestar.edu/clubs-cyfair.
