State representative announces service academy appointees
Rep. John Culberson from Texas' 7th District announced that 12 area students have accepted appointments to one of the country's service academies.
According to a press release, Langham Creek High School's Johnathan Eno, Jersey Village High School's Erica Lewandowski and Episcopal High School's Travis Ryan will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy; Houston Christian High School's Kathryn Quandt and Bellaire High School's Steven Doan will attend the U.S. Naval Academy; Lamar High School's Mariah and Marissa Caid-Loos, Cypress High School's Travis Peterson and Memorial High School's Brock Davidson will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School's John Wesely, Cy Falls High School's Zachary Zalomski and Lamar High School's William Gerrit Porter will attend the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
“Each year I am honored to nominate the best of the best to our nation’s prestigious service academies,” Culberson said in the release. “The United States Military Academy at West Point was established by President Thomas Jefferson in 1802. Jefferson believed the price of freedom was eternal vigilance. Today, we boast the most powerful and advanced military the world has ever known. The young men and women that dedicate their lives to service are among the most honorable and brave. I commend this year’s class and wish them the very best in their training and service to our great nation.”
Students who wish to apply to a service academy may request an application packet from Culberson's district office. Requests should be sent to the attention of Academy Nominations, 10000 Memorial Drive, Suite 620, Houston, TX 77024 and should include the student's full name, address, phone number and signature.
To qualify for admission to the class of 2017, students must be seventh-district residents between the ages of 17 and 22 and must graduate high school by July 1, 2012. The deadline to complete applications is Oct. 15, 2012.
