Cy-Fair ISD Board of Trustees reviews STARR results

The Cy-Fair ISD Board of Trustees reviewed the preliminary findings of the 2012 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness during its June 12 meeting.

According to the recently released notes of that meeting, the report showed that 76 percent of all students met the Level II: Satisfactory target in English I reading and 61 percent in English I writing. The same satisfactory mark was met by 89 percent of all students in world geography and 90 percent in Algebra I.

Specific TAKS benchmarks met by students were discussed by grade level, the meeting notes show.

Preliminary STAAR results for students in third through eighth grades show that third graders answered correctly 70 percent of reading questions and 72 percent of math questions; fourth graders answered correctly 70 percent of reading questions, 75 percent of math questions and 61 percent of writing questions. As for fifth graders, they answered correctly 72 percent of reading questions, 76 percent of math questions and 82 percent of science questions. Sixth-graders answered correctly 73 percent of reading questions and 63 percent of math questions.

The higher grades fared just as well, according to the meeting notes.

Seventh-graders answered correctly 72 percent of reading questions, 61 percent of math questions and 64 percent of writing questions. Eighth-graders answered correctly 71 percent of reading questions and 67 and 63 percent of science and social studies questions, respectively; however, these students answered less than half – 48 percent – of math questions correctly.

In other business, the board heard the police officers selected for the district's inaugural police department command staff; ordered a special election for Nov. 6 during which two trustees will be selected by voters; and revised several district policies relating to reports to parents, objective criteria for personnel decisions and retention and promotion.
