Playground equipment retailer PlayNation Houston has launched a book drive to support the 2,400 children served by the Reach Out and Read program at Fort Hood.
The book drive will run through Aug. 12 to promote early literacy and school readiness by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud.
The model for the program is to provide a new, age-appropriate book for each child who receives a health checkup. The books will be given to children ages 6 months through 5 years.
Along with the free book for every child, doctors and nurses will encourage parents to read with their children so that they can enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, according to a press release.
Residents can participate in the book drive or donate to the program by visiting PlayNation Houston at 16135 Cypress Rosehill Road in Cypress.
Donations and child sponsorships are also available online by visiting www.reachoutandread.org.
