Cy-Fair ISD AFJROTC cadets take top honors in drill meet
Five Cypress Ridge High School AFJROTC students recently won first-place honors in the academic competition at the C.E. King High School Salute to Veterans drill meet.
The five-member team included Justin Hang, Berta Gonzalez, Jared Reese, Gerard Samaroo and Oscar Hernandez.
According to a press release, the team outscored teams from 20 other Houston-area schools with 310 total points after completing a 50-question test spanning the entire four-year AFJROTC curriculum in aerospace science and leadership education.
This marked the second year that the school's team had the highest overall team score.
"Besides marching and physical fitness, the AFJROTC program also includes a complete academic curriculum," said Lt. Col. (Ret.) Porfirio Munoz, senior aerospace science instructor, in the release. "The entire Cypress Ridge family, including JROTCC, teachers and administrators, are all extremely proud of our cadets' academic success."
The Langham Creek High School team won first place in the color guard competition with 450 points. They also won second place in the unarmed regulation competition and third in the unarmed exhibition competition.
The Cypress Falls High School team won second place in the novice inspection and regulation competition with 694 points.
The Cy-Fair High School cadets took second place in the PT competition, finishing with 60 points.
