Cy-Fair grad Ogwumike leads Stanford to victory

Cy-Fair High School graduate Chiney Ogwumike poured in 27 points to lead Stanford University to a 74-50 home victory over conference rival University of Oregon on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford's website reported the junior forward also recorded 24 rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks for the Cardinals, who improved to 26-2 on the season and 15-1 in the PAC-12.

Stanford's next game is 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at Washington.

Born in Tomball, Ogwumike's parents are Peter and Ify Ogwumike. Her older sister, Nnemkadi, is also on the Stanford women's basketball team. A 2010 graduate of Cy-Fair High School, she captained both the volleyball and basketball teams as a junior and senior, lettering four years in both sports. Ogwumike led the basketball team to a pair of state titles (2008 and 2010) and three state title game appearances overall. In 2009-10, she earned national player of the year accolades from the Atlanta Tip-Off Club (presenters of the Naismith Award), Morgan Wooten, National Coaches Association, MaxPreps and Rivals.com. She was also named Gatorade's National Athlete of the Year in addition to its girls basketball National Player of the Year. Ogwumike played club basketball with Cy-Fair Shock Nike Elite from 2002-09, and helped her team to a U.S. Junior Nationals title and to a Nike Nationals semifinal appearance.
