Cy Falls High, Spillane win in science competition
From a Cy-Fair ISD press release:
Cypress Falls High School won the high school
competition of the 2010 District Science Olympiad tournament, while Spillane Middle School won the middle school competition, hosted by Cypress Lakes High School on Saturday, Jan. 30.
Cypress Falls placed first in nine events, second in four events and third in three events, finishing with a score of 72 to edge out second-place Cypress Woods High School's 74. Jersey Village High School placed third with a 122.
"Our team has always demonstrated a spirit of excellence. This was once again shown during this past week's District Science Olympiad contest," said Cypress Falls teacher and Science Olympiad coach Jennifer Wuellner.
"In a show of good sportsmanship, our team gave the second place team a standing ovation started by one of my students. I was really proud of my students for showing that spirit of excellence both throughout the competition and during the awards ceremony. Our team is now pumped for the regional contest and hopes to make it to state and perhaps on to nationals."
Cypress Falls will travel to the regional competition at the University of Texas on Saturday, Feb. 27.
In the middle school competition, Spillane placed first in eight events, second in seven events and third in two events to place first with an overall score of 69. Hopper Middle School was second with an 84 and Goodson Middle School was third with a 109.
"I am very proud of all the hard work, time and preparation the students put in for getting ready for the district competition. So much independence and motivation is required in Science Olympiad and the Spillane team rose to the challenge to be successful in their events," said teacher and coach James Horner. "The team was very excited to see all its hard work pay off and is already working hard again to get ready for the regional competition.
"I applaud the efforts of the other teams that were at the district competition. Both Hopper's and Goodson's teams did very well and were quite successful in many of the events."
Spillane will travel to the regional competition at Lone Star College-CyFair on Saturday, Feb. 13.
