Wildcats earn district hoops title the hard way

By TODD HVEEM
CHRONICLE CORRESPONDENT
The Cy Woods Wildcats had two chances to win their second straight District 15-5A basketball championship.
And it's a good thing.
After losing to Langham Creek at home, Cy Woods had to muster every ounce of energy to hold off Cy Creek 65-64 in double-overtime last week to claim its second district title at 10-3.
Cy Woods, which won the conference title by one game over Cy Creek, Cy Falls, Langham Creek and Cy-Fair (all 9-4), now will carry a 21-7 record into the Region II-5A playoffs.
We couldn't have asked for more (than a game) than that,'' said Cy Woods head coach Chris Draudt. We had three tough games (with Cy Falls, Langham Creek and Cy Creek) down the stretch. We were fortunate to control our own destiny.''
Draudt said one of the team's goals all year was to repeat as district champions.
It is never easy to win it once, let alone twice in a row,'' he said. Last year, us and Langham were the two best teams. This year, there were five teams who all were pretty even. To be able to come out on top is a good accomplishment.''
Cy Woods is led by point guard Andre Adams and forwards DeMarco Richardson and Carter Nash, who combined for 39 points in the win over Cy Creek.
The Wildcats now will take on Round Rock, Leander or Georgetown in the first round of the playoffs on Monday or Tuesday.
I think any of the teams (in our district) who get in the playoffs have a chance to win,'' Draudt said. We have all been pretty consistent. It should be exciting to see what happens.''
