Cy Falls aims high as district season nears
by TODD HVEEM
If there is one team who might be able to challenge the Cy-Fair Bobcats for the District 15-5A girls' basketball championship, it is probably the Cy Falls Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles return all five starters from a team that finished second to Cy-Fair a year ago with an 11-3 district record.
We like to think we can play them tough every year,'' said Cy Falls third-year head coach Jim Stephens. This is the best group we have had (since I have been here). I don't know if anybody can beat them, but we will give them all we've got.''
Cy Falls also might have the luck of the draw on its side.
This year, with 10 teams in District 15-5A, the coaches have elected to divide the conference into two five-team zones.
Cy Falls is in a zone with Cy Woods, Cy Ranch, Langham Creek and Cy Springs, while Cy-Fair is in a zone with Jersey Village, Cy Lakes, Cy Creek and Cy Ridge.
The teams will play the other four teams in their zone twice and the five teams in the other zone once to form a 13-game district schedule.
We only have to play them (Cy-Fair) once this year,'' Stephens said. It sure would be nice to win that one.''
Cy Falls opened the season by winning 12 of its first 15 games, including a huge win over Region II-5A power College Park.
That was a nice win,'' Stephens said. They have a great program and they always play so hard. I was really proud of the girls for that one.''
Cy Falls' three losses have come against state-ranked San Antonio Jay, Mansfield Timberview and College Park.
I think the thing that has really helped us so far this year is that there is no drop-off with our second five,'' Stephens said. Our depth has what has made it for us. We have 10 girls who can really play.''
The Golden Eagles' returning starters include sisters Je'Lena and Shernise Robertson, Macy Moore, Larissa Scott and Lynley Jones.
Je'Lena is a two-year all-district selection, while Larissa was named the Sixth-Man of the Year in District 15-5A a year ago.
Larissa is doing a great job for us,'' Stephens said. She is being heavily recruited.''
The other returners from last year's team include Katherine Metower, Sadalia Ellis and Shae Haynes. Freshman Carol Willie (6-1) also has seen plenty of playing time.
We have great kids,'' Stephens said. They have worked hard all summer and all fall. We still have a long way to go, but we are getting better every day.''
Cy Falls lost to College Park in the second round of the 2009 state playoffs.
This is the best group we have had since I have been here, without question,'' said Stephens, who was the boys head coach at Conroe, Westside, South Houston and Spring Woods before coming to Cy Falls. They are a great mix together. They are a great bunch of kids who get along well together.''
Cy Falls will take on Bellaire on Dec. 21 before opening District 15-5A play against Langham Creek on Dec. 30.
Langham Creek is much improved over last year,'' Stephens aid. It is going to be a good battle. I think it will be Cy-Fair, then the rest of us battling it out. It should be a great race.''
