Langham Creek enters stretch with berth in reach
By TODD HVEEM
At the beginning of the 2010 soccer season, Langham Creek head coach Scott Tucker boldly said every team had a shot to make the playoffs out of District 15-5A.
He was not far off.
With six matches left, there were seven Cy-Fair ISD teams within nine points of one another. The top four will advance to the Region II-5A state playoffs.
Nobody has been mathematically eliminated,'' Tucker said. The talent is so spread out now (with 10 teams in the district). The teams are so similar. One mistake here or there can cost you a game.''
Entering the final six matches, Cy Falls was in first with 17 points, followed by Cy Woods with 16, Cy-Fair with 14, Langham Creek and Cy Creek with 13 and Jersey Village and Cy Ridge with 9.
Each team is awarded three points for a win and one point for a tie.
Cy Springs is the best 0-6-1 team we have ever played,'' Tucker said. They have just had some unlucky breaks here or there.''
Langham Creek was 6-1-8 overall and 3-0-4 in district entering the final six matches. The Lobos will travel to meet Cy-Fair on Tuesday, then host Cy Springs on Friday.
Next week, Langham Creek will conclude the season by hosting Jersey Village on Tuesday, then playing Cy Woods at the Berry Center on Friday.
In our eight ties, we have had to come from behind to tie the game in six of them,'' Tucker said. Our kids fight so hard and use so much energy. The good thing is, we are refusing to relent, which is good. We just need to come up with some more intensity early on before we give something away.''
Tucker said the key in 15-5A is to make the playoffs.
Obviously, that is our goal every year,'' he said. I am glad we are in that group of four right now rather than within striking distance. But we still have tough games to play. The rest of these games are huge.''
Tucker has praised the play of captains Nick Boardley and Ryan Lewis. He said Alan Ramirez and Chijoke Akujuobi also have had great seasons.
Alan does well in the back or wherever we tell him to play,'' he said. But our team is not just about one player. As a collective group, our players step up and do some different things. The big thing is they all come in and work hard.''
Tucker said Cy Falls and Cy Woods look to be the teams to beat.
Cy Falls and Cy Woods are the best two out of their zone,'' he said. But I think the zones are decently balanced. The new schools are doing OK. Cy Lakes and Cy Ranch are competitive. They have very bright futures.''
